The Naha 10 type is a third class car that appeared in 1955 (Showa 30) as the first group of JNR lightweight passenger cars.
The Naha 10 series is the result of research into vehicle weight reduction that JNR's engineers have been working on since 1953. Although the basic dimensions are the same as those of conventional trains, the impact of the Swiss National Railways' light-weight passenger cars, which were used as a reference, can be recalled. It was epoch-making, with a European-style exterior and a body weight that was about 10 tons lighter than the Suha 43.
This lightweight all-metal car body manufacturing technology was quickly incorporated into trains and railcars, and a group called "Zenkin" was born.
