The Series 14 "Salon Car Naniwa" is a representative European-style passenger car of the Kansai region, born in September 1983, following the "Salon Express Tokyo," which sparked the "Joyful Train" boom. It features an observation deck reminiscent of the observation cars of the former prestigious limited express "Tsubame," and a chic paint scheme.

In 1994, a major renovation, primarily of the interior, was carried out, resulting in the removal of the green car mark and a change in the side stripe color from metallic gold to a golden yellow.
