JR ED79-0 Electric Locomotive (H-Rubber Gray)
The ED79 was introduced as a locomotive for the Seikan Tunnel, which opened in 1988. It was a modified ED75-700 locomotive, equipped with safety devices specifically designed for the Seikan Tunnel, and adapted to the tunnel's continuous gradients and increased speeds.
There were 21 ED79-0 locomotives, and they were used for both passenger and freight trains between Aomori and Hakodate. However, they were withdrawn from freight service in 2006, and all were retired with the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen in 2016.
