JR Hokkaido KiHa 54 Series (500 Series, White Headlights, Earth Exploration Railway Hanasaki Line) (Motorized)
The KiHa 54 Series 500 series, operating on JR Hokkaido, is a 21-meter-long, double-ended general-purpose diesel railcar designed for extremely cold climates. Between 2003 and 2005, it underwent equipment modernization work. A major external feature is the replacement of the bogies from the conventional DT22 to the bolsterless N-DT54 bogies. In addition to the equipment modernization, the front typhoon horn was removed to accommodate the installation of a deer whistle.
