[The culmination of the strongest carrier-based fighter] From its maiden flight in 1970 until its retirement in 2006, the US Navy's F-14 Tomcat continued to fly as the world's most powerful carrier-based air defense fighter. At the beginning of deployment, the main mission was fleet air defense, but since the 1980s, it has been equipped with a reconnaissance camera pod and engaged in reconnaissance missions. Since the 1990s, it has also demonstrated its ability in ground attack, and since the late 1990s, it has been equipped with a lantern targeting pod and laser-guided bombs, enabling precision attacks from a long distance. Since then, the equipment has been enhanced, and the Tomcat has evolved into a versatile fighter with excellent ground attack and reconnaissance capabilities. The first production F-14A engine was a P&W TF30, but the F-14B was replaced with a GE F110-GE-400. A further improved F-14D has a digital radar fire control system, increased detection range and increased processing speed. F-14D, which became the final production model of the series, produced 55 aircraft and began deploying troops in 1992. Patrol missions in southern Iraq, anti-terrorist operations in Afghanistan, and air support and reconnaissance in the Iraq War.
