JR Class ED79-0 Electric Locomotive (Single-Arm Pantograph Equipped)
The Class ED79 was introduced for service in the Seikan Tunnel (opened in 1988). It was derived from the Class ED75-700, featuring modifications to handle the tunnel's continuous gradients and allow for higher speeds, as well as the installation of safety systems specific to the Seikan Tunnel.
Later modifications included sealing the side inspection hatches, and starting in 2010, the pantograph on the "No. 2 end" was replaced with a single-arm type.
These locomotives supported transport operations on the Tsugaru-Kaikyo Line until the discontinuation of the "Hamanasu" and "Cassiopeia" services following the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen in March 2016, at which point the entire fleet was retired.
