ED76-1000 Series Electric Locomotive (Late-production model / Sash windows / JR Freight refurbished version)
The ED76-1000 series was introduced in 1970, based on the original ED76-0 series, to haul high-speed trains consisting of 20-series passenger coaches and Koki 10000-series freight cars; a total of 23 units were manufactured.
Starting with unit No. 1015, built in 1979, the side windows of the cab were changed to horizontal sliding sash windows.
Eighteen units of the 1000 series were transferred to JR Freight; while some continued to operate after undergoing refurbishment, they are currently being replaced by the successor EF510-300 series.
