JR Diesel Car KiHa 40-400 Series
The KiHa 40-400 series debuted in 1996 as a modified version of the KiHa 40-700 series; it featured an upgraded drivetrain and was designed for single-car operation during snow-clearing runs.
It served as the successor to the KiHa 53-500 series on the outer section of the Sassho Line; distinctive features of the 400 series included a body stripe interrupted by the gangway door and green passenger entry doors.
