The 5300 series was introduced in 1972 as a mass-produced air-conditioned train for the Kyoto Line. It was manufactured with the same body dimensions as the 3300 series, allowing for direct service with the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau (now Osaka Metro) Sakaisuji Line. However, the main motors were strengthened and two pantographs were installed per car to improve current collection.
Modifications to the trains included the installation of a display screen in 1986, as well as the addition of thin ceiling fans known as lorry fans to enhance the effectiveness of the air conditioning. Subsequently, in 1989, an emergency call system was installed to allow direct communication between passengers and crew, and in 1994, the front display screen was enlarged to allow for wheelchair access and improve visibility.
