The steam locomotive D51, affectionately known by the nickname "De-go-ichi," was manufactured by the Japanese National Railways (JNR). Since its debut in 1935, it became the most prolific steam locomotive in Japan, with a total of 1,115 units produced and operating throughout the whole country. Due to modifications tailored to specific regions and lines, D51 locomotives exhibited a wide range of variations. Particularly in Hokkaido, they featured distinctive equipment that could be termed as "extreme cold weather specifications," highlighting their adaptation to harsh climates. In addition, the D51, equipped with a device called a "giesl ejector" to improve combustion efficiency, is characterized by its flat, inverted trapezoidal chimney, which has the effect of reducing coal consumption by approximately 10%.
