Series 12
The Series 12 passenger cars were manufactured between 1969 and 1978 and are express-type seating passenger cars capable of a maximum speed of 110km/h. They are equipped with underfloor diesel generator-powered air conditioning and other features that rival those of electric trains and diesel railcars of the time, and became the basis for the new Series 14 and subsequent passenger cars that appeared later. Initially, they were operated as special trains and for transporting passengers to the Osaka Expo, and later as regular express trains, and were seen in action all over the country except Hokkaido. In later years, they were converted into commuter trains and joy trains, and can still be seen in action today as passenger cars for temporary use.
