The "Austin Healey Sprite" joined the lineup in 1958 as an entry sports car for the "BMC (British Motor Corporation) Group" that existed from 1952 to 1966. Aiming to be a "small sports car that anyone can easily enjoy", the engine and undercarriage of small mass-produced cars are used to keep costs down and equipment is kept to a minimum. In addition, we also focused on weight reduction, such as adopting the world's first semi-monocoque body as an open body. The 948cc in-line 4-cylinder engine was only 43ps, but with a vehicle weight of just over 600kg, which was lighter than modern kei cars, it boasted the highest level of power performance in its class at the time. Combined with the highly responsive rack and pinion steering gearbox, this is a car that reconfirms the joy of driving and manipulating a lightweight sports car. The Mk I, produced from 1958 to 1960, is the most popular of the series, which was produced for 13 years until 1971. Not only is it the most embodied of the initial development idea of eliminating unnecessary parts other than driving, but the unique and lovely front mask that the headlights protruding from the bonnet hood reveals attracts many users. That's why. It is called by various nicknames such as "crab eyes" in Japan, "frog-eye" in England, and "bug-eye" in the United States.
