JNR EF81-300 electric locomotive (first generation, Rose, Tabata depot)
Of the four EF81-300 series locomotives that appeared as locomotives for the Kanmon Tunnel, the first generation 301 and 302 were transferred to Uchigo depot in 1978 to replace the EF80s used on the Joban Line.
These locomotives were distinctive for being painted in the same red No. 13 as other EF81s due to visibility issues when used on the Joban Line.
After being transferred to Tabata depot in 1982, they were also used to pull passenger trains such as the sleeper express "Yuzuru" and express "Towada" that run on the Joban Line.
In 1985-86, they were transferred to Moji depot and used again on the Kanmon section, but continued to be used in red No. 13 until they were scrapped.
