A wide variety of baggage trains were seen, composed of steel mail cars, pallet baggage coaches and postal coaches. Even after the opening of the Shinkansen, there were many long-distance baggage trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines, connecting the Tokyo metropolitan area with the Kyushu area and the rest of Japan.
