The F/A-18 Hornet is a carrier-based fighter and carrier-based attack aircraft for the US Navy and Marine Corps developed as a successor to the F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair carrier-based attack aircraft.
- In 1974, the US Navy announced a plan aimed at developing the next carrier-based fighter attack aircraft.
-This candidate is General Dynamics' YF-16 and Northrop's YF-17 light fighter.
-The US Navy installed a semi-active radar-guided AAM Sparrow and requested the introduction of a fire control system to operate it and various maintenance to operate an aircraft carrier.
-As a result of the examination, it was decided that a large, twin-engine YF-17 would be used as the prototype for a major redesign, and McDonnell Douglas would be the main contractor.
- Unit 1 was completed on September 13, 1978 and succeeded in its first flight in November of the same year.
-Unlike previous fighters, the F/A-18 can perform both fighter and attack missions with a single model.
-As a result, the US Navy has established a combat flight attack squadron (VFA) that combines the missions of a combat squadron and an attack squadron, and the Marine Corps operates it with VMFA as a successor to the Phantom.
-The A type is the first mass-produced type, and the B type is a double-seat trainer type that adds rear seats without extending the fuselage.
-The C type is the A type, and the D type is the B type, each of which has improved night attack capabilities.
-The F/A-18 Hornet has been adopted by many foreign countries such as Australia and Canada in addition to the US Navy and Marine Corps.
