Series 383 is a pendulum system train which was developed in order to replace Series 381 and to improve the image of Express Train "Shinano" prior to the Winter Olympics held in 1998 in Nagano. It is operated now as Express Train "Wide View Shinano" on Chousaisen and other lines down to Osaka, etc.
