-The 417 series was introduced in 1978 for the purpose of converting local trains in the Sendai area to electric trains.
-It features a two-door semi-cross seat body similar to the Kiha 47, which aims to alleviate congestion during commuting.
●It is an AC/DC train with a mechanism similar to the 415 series, and has a cold and snow resistant structure, so snow cutting rooms are installed at the rear of the electric car's driver's cab and at each end of the car to serve as air intakes for cooling the main motor. .
-Although only 15 cars of the 417 series were manufactured in 5 formations, the same body structure was also used in the 413 series, 713 series, and 717 series of express train modifications.
- Air conditioning equipment was gradually installed from around 1988, and from around 1990, the car body paint was changed to the ``Tohoku Regional Headquarters Color'', which is a green band on a white background.
-All cars were active on the Tohoku Main Line and Senzan Line, mainly in the Sendai area, but were retired from regular operation in July 2007.
-After retiring from the JR line, one 3-car train was transferred to the Abukuma Express and was used mainly during rush hours.
