Seibu Railways Series 101 first appeared in 1979 when Seibu Chichibu Line was opened. To drive on the steep slopes in mountainous areas, it was equipped with high-powered motor and dynamic brake, and colored yellow.
As an improved version of this original series 101, Series New 101 made its debut in 1979 with modern black front face with clear center yellow frame to facilitate the driver having a wide view from a higher cabin seat. In its early period, it had also gray painting around the side windows, but this gray trim was been abolished in 1996. Kato makes an N scale model in this new yellow painting without gray accent.
