[Britain's Eternal Masterpiece] The Spitfire was the main fighter of the Royal Air Force during World War II. The beautiful elliptical main wings and tight fuselage were much more sophisticated in terms of structure and aerodynamics than fighters of the same era, and the Rolls-Royce Merlin liquid-cooled engine, which is famous as a masterpiece engine, was installed. The prototype aircraft first flew in March 1936, and the first mass-produced Mk.I began deploying to troops in August 1938. In the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, when Britain faced a crisis of national survival, Mk.I defended Britain from the onslaught of the German Air Force as the core of the fighter squadron. The Luftwaffe took a lot of damage and decided to postpone the British landing operation indefinitely. Due to this success, the Spitfire came to be called a "national rescue fighter" by the British public.
