JR Diesel Car KiHa 100 Series (2nd Batch) (Motorized)
The KiHa 100 series diesel car was introduced in 1990 to replace older models such as the KiHa 20 and KiHa 45 series.
Four prototype units were built first, followed by four improved mass-production units (1st batch) in 1991; later that same year, the 2nd batch—featuring modifications such as a redesigned pilot (skirt)—was introduced.
While primarily operated on the Ofunato, Kitakami, Yamada, Kamaishi, and Ominato lines, the series is being phased out; it retired from the Ofunato Line with the timetable revision of March 2025, and retirement is proceeding across the fleet, focusing initially on the prototype and 1st batch units.
