JR E231-500 Series Electric Car (Yamanote Line, First Car) Basic Set
The E231-500 series entered service in April 2002, replacing the 205 series prior to the Yamanote Line's D-ATC conversion.
This car was the first JR train in the Tokyo metropolitan area to feature LCD screens for information, installed above each door.
As a congestion relief measure, the six-door car previously attached to car 10 was also attached to car 7, bringing the total number of six-door cars to two per train.
In 2010, with the installation of platform gates at each station, the existing six-door cars were replaced, and newly manufactured four-door E231 cars were installed in cars 7 and 10.
With the introduction of the new E235 series electric car in 2015, these cars began to be transferred to the Chuo and Sobu lines, and all cars were replaced by January 2020.
