The 201 series is a JNR commuter train that was introduced in 1979.
It was the first Japanese National Railway to adopt armature chopper control, making it an energy-saving and maintenance-saving vehicle.
From 2003 to 2008, JR West Japan's 201 series underwent renewal work called ``Constitutional Improvement 30N'' to extend the life of the vehicle, resulting in major changes to both the exterior and interior.
Furthermore, from around 2009, it was replaced with the WAU709 type cooler, but with the introduction of the successor 323 series, the number gradually decreased, and it was finally retired from the Osaka Loop Line and Sakurajima Line in June 2019.
