The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was under construction when the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck on January 17, 1995. As it was one of the world's largest suspension bridges, the project was not handled by a single company; instead, major Japanese general contractors and manufacturers specializing in shipbuilding and bridge construction formed multiple joint ventures to share the work. At the time of the earthquake, the main cables had already been strung. Because the epicenter was located right next to the bridge, a peculiar phenomenon occurred: ground displacement caused the bridge's length to stretch by approximately one meter beyond the original plan. However, this extra meter was accommodated by modifying the design of the bridge girders (the roadway section) yet to be built, and the bridge was successfully completed on schedule in April 1998. It is truly remarkable.
