Commonly known as the “Red Arrow,” it was active on the Chichibu and Okuchichibu Lines connecting Ikebukuro and Seibu Chichibu, as well as the Musashi Line connecting Ikebukuro and Hanno. Although it initially ran in a 4-car formation, from 1974 to 1976 the intermediate section was increased by 2 cars to form a 6-car formation.

In 1993, it was succeeded by the 10000 Series limited express trains and retired in 1995, passing the baton to the new model. In 1970, it received the Blue Ribbon Award from the Japan Railfan Club.
