Asakaze

The prototype series 20 express train “Asakaze,” meaning “Morning Breeze,” was introduced in 1958 for overnight travel between Tokyo and Hakata, Kyushu, requiring only 17 hours, an epoch making speed at that time.

The appearance was very modern at that time with rounded corners on each car and an attractive paint scheme of three horizontal cream lines on all blue car bodies over gray painted floor and trucks.

The “Asakaze” was actually a harbinger for ensuing express sleeper trains “Sakura,” “Hayabusa” and “Mizuho,” all to be nicknamed “blue trains”.
